Workshop Description:

The need to negotiate effectively is something that we all face regularly throughout our personal and professional lives. Our awareness of the significance of the results tends to vary according to the relevance of the agreements we make. The impact of an agreement about who will go grocery shopping this week, will certainly be of minor importance compared to one involving a job offer determining a career path, the purchase of a new home, or a peace agreement between hostile parties. Great negotiators are made through concerted effort, not simply born with a “special talent”. In the Vital Negotiation Skills workshop, participants will learn and apply through practice, the approaches, systematic methods, tools, and skills to consistently get the results we want in all types of negotiations.

Topics covered include:
• Negotiating for life
• Methods and approaches
• Claiming and creating value
• The psychology of negotiation
• Planning tools
• Setting specific goals, targets, and limits
• Asking the right questions
• The importance of practiced listening
• Negotiation process phases
• Being systematic with concessions
• Common tactics and effective response strategies
• Breaking out of deadlock
• The importance of non-verbal communication
• Personal and international/cultural influences
• Simulations, feedback, and debriefings

After instructor input on theory, methods, planning tools and other vital negotiation skills, through instructor presentation and participant activities, all participants will prepare for and participate in 2 live team negotiation simulations including a split-group planning phase (e.g. buyers/sellers) using specific planning tools, the actual live negotiation simulation phase, followed by a team feedback and instructor debriefing phase. To close the seminar, participants will present individual ‘Lessons Learned’ to be internalized with the aid of their own negotiator’s self-development plans.
